Students in a Lynchburg after-school program participated in an essay contest to explain the importance of making right choices in their lives. The winning essay is below. Special thanks to all the students who participated in the essay contest and who are involved in the IAM afterschool program (Individuals Abstaining til Marriage). Making Right Choices Is Important To Me Because Making right choices is important to me because I have seen how teen pregnancies have affected my family and my lifestyle. My mother had her first three kids by the age of seventeen. Then two more by the young age of twenty-three. I know moms who are at least 30 to 40. My mom can be my sister. When I was learning to ride a tricycle, she was going to get her learner's permit! My life is rough, but with it comes knowledge. My life is full of people who did not wait to say, "I do." You might as well say my grandma has all her grandkids. Drugs and money have also played a big part in my life. My mom got heavily into them and one night she let us spend the night over with her and that morning there was knock on the door. A police officer was asking for her. I didn't see her for six months. This is why I say I am forever going to break the cycle, to get my sister and myself out of the destiny we were born into.
